Clint Eastwood's Mystic River is a dark, ominous brooding about a crime in the present that is emotionally linked to a crime in the past. [...] Written by Brian Helgeland, based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, the movie uses a group of gifted actors who are able to find true human emotion in a story that could have been a whodunit, but looks too deeply and evokes too much honest pain. It is about pain spiraling down through the decades, about unspoken secrets and unvoiced suspicions. And it is very much about the private loyalties of husbands and wives.

Es geht um Einzelgänger und die seelischen Abgründe und Gefühle, die in jedem stecken, jahrelang unterdrückt wurden und erst durch äussere Umstände ans Tageslicht kommen, obwohl sie doch das ganze Leben bestimmen. Dass dies deutlich wird, ist zu einem Grossteil Clint Eastwoods hervorragender Darstellerriege zu verdanken, allen voran Sean Penn, der glaubwürdig den zerrissenen, rasenden Vater spielt. Wenn Tim Robbins depressiv auf der Treppe vorm Haus sitzt oder Sean Penn ihn verzweifelt und den Tränen nahe anbrüllt, weil er ihn für den Mörder seiner Tochter hält, dann hat der Film seine stärksten Momente. Es sind solche packenden Szenen in einer glaubwürdigen Atmosphäre, für die Eastwood berühmt ist. Hier sind sie wegen der komplexen Struktur und dem permanenten Springen zwischen den Haupt- und Nebenfiguren noch wichtiger.
