Atilas '74
Mihalis Kakogiannis, Chypre, 1975o
In the wake of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, Michael Cacoyannis shot this personal, angry, and polarizing examination of the events that led to the forced displacement of over 200,000 people with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot roots. In the opening credits, the filmmaker calls his undertaking a “testimony,” and indeed, he collects an oppressive series of images and sound recordings that bear witness to human rights violations. Numerous interviews include accusations against the Greek junta, British politics, and the influence of the US.
